The locals affectionately refer to the Bletterbach Gorge as the “Grand Canyon of South Tyrol”. The 8 km long and 400 m deep natural spectacle in today’s Trudner Horn Nature Park was formed around 15,000 years ago. Look forward to impressive canyons, fossil artefacts, volcanic rock and a hiking experience with a difference.

High ropes Obereggen
Obereggen High Ropes Course

There are ropes, suspension bridges, platforms and all sorts of other fun stations to be overcome which is some 20 meters above the ground. Dizzying heights for many, for others an adrenaline-fuelled piece of cake. The absolute highlight: the 90-metre-long zipline, which rewards you at the end of the course with a flight of fancy through the forest high ropes course.

Ready for the alpine “Alm” tour? The Epircher Laner Alm can be reached from the hotel on foot or with the Ochsenweide cable car. It is the starting point of Almenweg trail no. 9, which takes you on a 45-minute hike through the Latemarium to the Zischg Alm or up to the Mayrl Alm. The latter is beautifully situated below the peaks of the Latemar at around 2,050 m. In winter, the alpine huts can all be reached via the slopes and offer the possibility for a stop for refreshments. Like to find out more? Then on to Baita Gardonè. The popular mountain restaurant is located in Predazzo. Tip: a ride on the Alpine Coaster (rail toboggan run) is well worth a go! P.S. From Strauben to Apfelkiachl… the mountain huts of the Val d’Ega also spoil you with culinary highlights!

Larch forest
Lärchenwaldele

Peace and relaxation can be found in many places in Obereggen – but the wooded area right next to our Hotel Sonnalp is something special: take a short stroll through the landscaped park and admire the hand-carved wooden figures …

Bolzano
City stroll in Bolzano

Strolling through the historic old town, sitting at Waltherplatz with a coffee and watching the world go by, wandering through the arcades, haggling at the fruit market, debating art in the Museion, marvelling at the Ötzi mummy and all kinds of exhibits in the South Tyrolean Archaeology Museum, climbing up to Firmiano Castle, walking along the Talfer promenade. Where? In the provincial capital of Bolzano, of course, which is only a 30-minute drive from Obereggen. Tip: you travel free of charge by bus to Bolzano with the Guest Card.

Latemar circuit with the e-bike
The Latemar Ronda by e-bike

Circumnavigating the Latemar by e-bike is a wonderful experience: the path leads through a picturesque landscape with breathtaking views of the Dolomites. The tour is about 50 km long and can be completed in one day. Of course, you can also ride it in several stages, to give you more time for photo stops and exploring.

Latemar circumnavigation with the e-bike
E-bike tours around Rosengarten & Latemar

Rent an e-bike or MTB directly at the hotel and set off: right into the fabulous world of Latemar and Rosengarten! Whichever tour you choose – Obereggen has a lot to offer. On the one hand, there is the tour to the legendary Lago di Carezza, also known as the Rainbow Lake, or the panoramic pleasure tour to the mountain huts of the Val d’Ega.

Mountain hut Oberholz
Oberholz mountain hut

Not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a project of the heart: the Oberholz mountain hut was built by the Obereggen lift company with senior manager Georg Weissensteiner. In addition to the cuisine, it also offers magnificent views to marvel at – from Re Ortles, over the Alpi Venoste to the Tessa Group and beyond. The mountain hut can be reached in winter and summer, whether on skis, on foot or by bike. Our favourite in summer: from the hotel up through the Herrenwald, below the Forcella del Forcellone, continue on the panorama path No. 22 to the viewing platform and then to the Oberholz mountain hut.

Mogul meadows Durabühl
Durabühl meadows

It is one of those places that hardly anyone knows about: the forest and meadow hike via Durabühl and the Grosswiesen up to the Epircher Laner Alm mountain hut. Highly recommended in June and July, when the most beautiful flower meadows are in bloom. It is not for nothing that the bumpy Buckelwiesen meadows are among the natural monuments in Obereggen. Authentic picture postcard moments – and perfect for many a holiday photo!

Mountain tour to the Pisahütte
Mountain tour to the rifugio Torre di Pisa

The hike up to the Pisa Hütte over the Forcella dei Camosci, right into the rocky landscape of the Latemar, is always an unforgettable experience: the views along the serpentine path give a foretaste of the wonderful nature experience that lies ahead. The ascent is somewhat strenuous, but worthwhile and absolutely doable. Read more about it in our Sonnalp-Blog …

Insider tip - Karersee
Lago Carezza

It is probably one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Dolomites and is one of the most famous photo motifs in South Tyrol: when the mountain peaks of the Latemar and Catinaccio reflect on the shimmering surface of the turquoise water, you can’t help grab your camera and start shooting. It is also known as the “Rainbow Lake” because of its play of colours and harbours a mysterious legend.
