Calm is slowly returning to Obereggen, South Tyrol. The days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping, and autumn is settling in around the Latemar – for us at Hotel Sonnalp, it’s time to look back on an eventful summer in the Dolomites.
Countless sunny days, shared hikes, special encounters and evenings full of indulgence. Familiar faces and new ones. And above all, the many small moments that made this summer at Hotel Sonnalp truly special.
The warm days invited out into the mountains in Val d’Ega valley, while mild evenings meant lingering on the terrace. Nature never failed to put on a show: as an enchanting menu was served from the kitchen, the sky above the Latemar turned shades of red, pink and gold – sometimes so breathtaking that it was worth stepping out onto the terrace between courses, camera in hand to catch the moment.
Speaking of dinner: of course, no summer recap would be complete without the kitchen. With great creativity, high-quality South Tyrolean ingredients and new ideas, chef Martin Köhl and his team delivered daily culinary highlights – dishes you’ll remember long after, each one a reason to come back to Sonnalp.
Together with host David, guests immersed themselves in the world of South Tyrolean wine: visits to the Kornell winery in Settequerce and the Obermoser winery in Rencio offered not only excellent wine tastings, but also a chance to get to know the people, philosophies and stories behind each bottle – two very different wineries that gave a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of South Tyrolean winemaking.
At Sonnalp itself, guests got an inside look at our own wine cellar with a tasting of David’s personal favourites. At the gala dinner, it became clear just how exciting it can be when the kitchen and the cellar work together: the perfect wine pairing for each course turned the evening into a true journey of flavour.
The days spent together with our returning guests are always something special. Many of our guests have been joining us for years now – turning a summer holiday in Obereggen into a reunion among friends.
During shared excursions, there was plenty of time for good conversations and togetherness. These easy, sociable hours are exactly what make our returning guests’ weeks so unique.
Standing still? Not with Alfred. This summer once again, our hiking guide Alfred enthusiastically led guests through the mountain world of the Val d’Ega valley. Sometimes going high up to the Rifugio Pisa hut with breathtaking panoramic views, sometimes a gentler route up to the Corno Bianco, and at other times venturing into the bizarre rock formations of the Latemar Labyrinth. Different trails, different challenges – but always with the same goal: being outdoors together, experiencing the Dolomites, and drifting off to sleep at 1,600 metres full of new impressions.
In the mountains, you don’t always have to look far above you to find something special – as our botanist Elisabeth likes to show. She enriched the summer with her knowledge of native plants and herbs, leading guests to beautiful spots and pointing out small treasures that would otherwise go unnoticed. That’s how a simple hike turns into a little journey of discovery – and the mountains of South Tyrol reveal a whole new side.
For now, it’s time to say “ciao summer”. What remains are the memories – above all, of you,
because you are what makes summer at Sonnalp what it is.
And with that, we’re already looking forward to seeing you again in the snow, when Obereggen
transforms once more into a winter wonderland.
